Welcome to the official website of Panopticum

Panopticum is a progressive rock/metal band from Ypres, in Belgium. It was founded in 1997 as a highschool-trio, each one of them determined to become a better musician.

The challenging aspect of playing and composing progressive music, typically attracts skilled musicians. However, the thing that really brought Panopticum to it's current line-up, is a combination of coincidence, though decisions, and friendship.

Where are we today? We all started off playing classical music at 10 years old. Most of us continued studying their instruments, and graduated. In our professional lives, we're musicians, stduying, teaching, mixing and playing music during most of our time. Besides Panopticum, everyone has other musical environments, bands, and activities.

Still, there's no place like Panopticum, where we can create the kind of music we like most of all.

What actually is progressive rock? Much discussion is going on, but for sure, it is defenitively not copying Genesis from the 70's.

Typical elements in progressive are: extended songs with rich harmony, shifting time signatures, evolving musical themes, virtuosity and improvisation.

Just a few examples of superb bands that have made a massive impact on the 'Prog' scene: Dream Theater, Genesis, Rush, Toto, Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, ...

So, what about the word "Panopticum"? It litteraly means "to see everything". Some clever guy invented some kind of prison with a watchtower in the middle, and called in a Panopticum. You can read about it here: (dutch) (french). To us, the word simply sounded okay, but it might have a deeper meaning than we realize.

Enjoy the music! Check out the news section below.

NEWS

A compilation of Belgian Progressive and Symphonic Rock
The Belgian prog and sympho scene is doing quite well : a heap of new quality bands are following in the footsteps of renowned predecessors like Irish Coffee, Machiavel, Isopoda, Now, Univers Zero and many others - one can easily say that there is a revival of the musical style in spite of the lack of attention and respect from the mainstream media.

Together with Geert Fieuw, guitar player for the band Beyond The Labyrinth, initiator and coordinator of the project, Prog-Nose vzw and Prog-Résiste asbl are compiling a CD to present some of the bands in this scene. These are the confirmed bands until now :

- Ghiribizzi (http://www.ghiribizzi.com)
- Karma Depth (http://www.karmadepth.org)
- Panopticum (http://www.panopticum.org)
- Globalys (http://www.globalys.be)
- Beyond The Labyrinth (http://www.beyond-the-labyrinth.com)
- AmAndA (http://www.polypheme.com/amanda/)
- Quantum Fantay (http://www.quantumfantay.com)

You can expect more names in the current of the weeks to come !

A Taste Of Belgium is planned for release in the month of May, and will be exclusively available through Prog-Résiste and Prog-Nose (in pre-inscription), and through the participating bands (after the period of pre-inscription)

Panopticum is writing new songs
hello everybody,

We're writing new songs, we already have 6 songs ready and a 7th is in the making. Some of the new songs are a little bit more metal then the CD Reflection but it's still Panopticum!! We'll try to rehearse them as fast and as good as possible so you can hear them in one of our future gigs...

We hope to see you soon!!

Mindview

I can be proud to be born in West-Flanders. This band has very motivated and skilled musicians. Panopticum equals quality, inventivity, and progressive! If you like Ayreon, you'l probably like Panopticum as well. Female singer is quite surprising, it tends to folk, but it fits in wonderfully. Come on labels (Transmission?) give these guys a contract!

After the promotional gigs for the last "Reflection" demo, Panopticum is already into writing new material. We already know these will bring the band to a next level and expect them to be different than previous compositions. But hey! It's still progressive! ;->

Isaac Delahaye Joined Panopticum
A few weeks ago Isaac Delahaye replaced Tim Coulembier on guitar. Tim now plays the extremely difficult basslines. We will watch very closely at the concert at JOC to examine Isaac's skills.

PS: Notice that we don't have any pictures of Isaac on this site. Anyone who can capture this person on digital or analog film can report this to the webmasters.
